2. Reindex the files when opening the software after an "ungraceful" exit.

If the software "locks up" or "boots you out" or if you turn off the computer without exiting the software, you should reindex the files (File, Reindex) immediately after opening the software the next time. This will prevent many unusual problems which may occur, such as: not finding the correct plant name; not seeing an appraisal worksheet that has been saved; not finding a client; seeing duplicate lines of data, etc.

3. Only use one version of the Nursery Appraisal Software at a time.

Always close one version of the Nursery Appraisal Software before opening another to avoid using the incorrect crop year software. (A warning message will appear on the screen if you attempt to have two copies of the same crop year Nursery Appraisal Software open simultaneously.) The software applications will be looking for the same files. If you attempt to have two copies open at the same time, you may get an ''Illegal Seek Offset'' error that will close the software. If that happens, close both applications and reindex the files immediately upon re-opening either software.

4. Be very sure of the source of the files when you import files into the Nursery Appraisal Software.

An option screen will appear when you import files. Be sure that you have checked the correct version of software as the source of the files. The files exported from each of the software applications and from each year have different file extensions (e.g. .xp2, .xc2, .xp3 or .xc3). When a source is checked, the computer will only be looking for that file extension. If you check the "All Files" box, you will be shown all files, but you will not be able to import any files that are not from the source that you specified on the option screen. You will see an error message. If that happens, cancel the operation and try again. If you have changed the file extension on a file name, the import will fail.

5. Be certain to print the "Import Exception Report" when importing or copying files.

The "Import Exception Report" will be generated before a file is imported or copied. It will indicate any changes in state and/or county, insurance type, and hardiness zone. It will also list plants that, for one reason or another, have not been included in the import and/or plants where the maximum insurance price has been reduced. If you desire to have the excluded plants included on the "Appraisal Worksheet," you must manually enter them. Those marked as having the insurance price reduced should be checked individually.

In most cases, the reason for a plants inclusion on the report is listed. However, one catchall heading is ''Unable to import these plants.'' Some of the reasons for a plant name to appear under this heading are: an internal serial number was changed for the plant by DataScape; or some data for that plant was corrupt. If there are no changes to be reported, the "Import Exception Report" will be empty.

The "Import Exception Report" will only be available at the initial import or copy of the list, so you must print or preview it at the time of import. If you forget, you can import the list again to preview or print the "Import Exception Report" and then cancel the process or delete the second imported/copied list.

6. If you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or 98, you may see the error message, "API call caused an exception."

If the message appears on your screen, you may click on "Ignore" and continue. This problem is caused by some printer drivers and might be solved by installing printer drivers from the Windows CD rather than from the printer manufacturer. Continuing to click on "Ignore" when this error message appears will not cause any problems with your data.
